If a business is looking for a device that helps quickly freeze products while still maintaining quality, then the air blast tunnel certainly cannot be ignored. This is a device commonly used in frozen food processing factories. Join Tan Long to learn in detail about the technical specifications, operating principles, and outstanding features of this device in the article below.
Introduction What is a air blast tunnel?
A air blast tunnel is a cold storage that uses the principle of forced convection air flow. The temperature in the tunnel is very low from -45℃ to -50℃, helping to quickly reduce the temperature and freeze fresh food or seafood.
The cooling unit will be placed directly on the floor combined with a fan system placed above to transmit cold air through each layer of the cargo truck to freeze the product. The freezer tunnel is also designed with a wind deflector at the top to guide cold air to the end of the room and circulate back to the condenser from below.
Specifications
Air blast tunnel insulation panel
The structure of the freezer tunnel is guaranteed to be insulated by using 125mm thick polyurethane wall and ceiling panels, density from 40-42kg/m3, sprayed with a high-pressure sprayer.
- Wall panel: The inside is covered with 0.6mm thick SUS 304 stainless steel, the outside is covered with 0.8mm thick SUS 304 stainless steel and covered with anti-scratch tape.
- Ceiling panel: The inside is covered with 0.6mm thick SUS 304 stainless steel, the outside is covered with 0.6mm thick SUS 304 stainless steel and is also covered with anti-scratch tape.
- Base panel: The inside is covered with 1.2mm thick SUS 304 stainless steel, the outside is covered with 0.6mm thick SUS 304 stainless steel, molded and welded, waterproof. The floor of the air blast tunnel is designed with a sufficient slope to thoroughly drain water during cleaning.
- Sliding door: Also insulated with 100mm thick polyurethane, density 40-42kg/m3. Both sides of the door are covered with 0.6mm thick SUS 304 stainless steel covered with anti-scratch tape. All materials are imported from Europe. The door is equipped with silicone sealing gaskets, a heating resistor to help prevent snow build-up, and a lock with a mechanism to prevent people from being trapped inside.
Evaporator
The evaporator is equipped with heat exchange tubes made from stainless steel or copper, and fins made from aluminum depending on the specific refrigeration system. The technical parameters of the indoor unit are optimally calculated and selected to ensure high heat exchange efficiency, long-term continuous operation and energy cost savings. Evaporators are provided by famous manufacturers such as Guntner, Thermofin, Kelvion (EU).
Evaporator Fans
Fans are manufactured from aluminum alloy, have high performance and low energy consumption, provided by leading manufacturers such as Ziehl-Abegg or Rosenberg of Germany.
The fan motor is specially designed for application in wind tunnels, meeting IP56 standards for complete heat and moisture insulation. The motor shell is covered with a special protective layer to help the device operate durably in deep negative temperature environments. The motors are provided by ABB or WEG.
Operating Principle
Frozen products will be placed on cart trays in layers with a fixed gap so that air can circulate easily. Then the cargo truck is put into the wind tunnel in batches.
The wind will be blown by the fan system to the end of the room, then redirected downward and through the trays of the cart. Thousands of cold rays will directly and continuously contact the entire product surface, causing the thermal layers surrounding the product to be broken.
This freezing process happens very quickly. After the product reaches the required freezing point, it will be separated from the tray and stored.

Why should you use a freezer?
When food or any product is frozen, the water inside changes into ice. The longer the freezing process, the larger the ice crystals will cause the product’s cells to burst, affecting the quality and flavor of the product.
Therefore, when using a wind tunnel, the product will freeze quickly, causing very small crystals to form, not causing much damage to the quality of the product, helping to preserve food longer.
