Evaporative condenser

Evaporative condenser (evaporative condenser) is the device that rejects heat from the refrigerant after compression, combining sprayed water and forced air in a single block. By using the latent heat of vaporisation of water, an evaporative condenser needs a smaller heat transfer area and consumes less electricity than pure air cooling at the same capacity.

Tan Long supplies evaporative condensers with heat rejection capacity from 250 kW to 2,500 kW, running on R22, R404a, R507 and NH3 (amoniac), built entirely in stainless steel to resist corrosion in a permanently wet environment.

Which industries use evaporative condensers?

These are the sectors where Tan Long installs evaporative condensers most often:

  • Seafood processing: fish fillets, shrimp, squid and frozen export products.
  • Food and meat processing: carcass meat, cut meat and ready-prepared foods.

Each sector has different requirements for temperature range, contact materials and capacity. Please contact Tan Long's engineering team for advice on the right configuration for your products.

Working principle

After compression, the high-temperature, high-pressure refrigerant vapour is fed into the upper vapour header and on to the heat exchange coil. There the hot gas exchanges heat with water and condenses into liquid, which drains to the high-pressure receiver below. The unit is cooled by water sprayed from nozzles distributed evenly directly above the coil.

Working principle
Working principle

After exchanging heat with the refrigerant, the water heats up and is cooled by the air moving in the opposite direction from bottom to top, so the temperature of the water remains almost constant. All the condensation heat of the refrigerant has been discharged by the air. The air moves forcibly by fans placed above (exhaust fans) or below (blower fans). Additional water is supplied completely automatically by the float valve.

Heat exchange coil

  • The heat exchange coil is completely hot-dip galvanized after complete installation, the zinc layer thickness is up to 70 microns, significantly increasing the coil's lifespan.
  • Oval heat exchanger tube 21.6 x 31.7, 1.5mm thick increases heat exchange efficiency, the entire heat exchanger tube has no welded joints, minimizing risks during use.
  • Design pressure 20 bar, heat exchange coil is tested for durability, tightness according to pressure standards before and after hot-dip galvanizing to ensure safety before putting into use.

Axial fan

  • The fan blades are mounted directly on the motor for high transmission efficiency, simple structure, low maintenance cost.
  • The fans are large in diameter and low in speed, 3-5 dB quieter than conventional fans, with even air velocity and lower energy use. The blades are high-strength aluminium alloy, light in weight and highly corrosion resistant
  • Using specialized motor for condenser, with high protection level IP55, withstands harsh working environment and high temperature

Water pump

  • Use horizontal water pump specialized for condenser, low pressure head, large flow, low energy consumption
  • Water pump is installed inside the condenser, limiting environmental impact and increasing lifespan.
  • Using WEG or Simens motor with high protection level IP55, low power.
  • The suction head of the water pump is equipped with a filter net and an anti-vortex system to help the pump operate stably. The discharge head is equipped with a flow switch to protect the motor.

Equipment that works alongside the condenser

The condenser handles the heat rejection side. These three groups decide how hard it has to work:

  • Refrigeration compressor — the compression capacity sets how much heat must be rejected, which in turn sets the condenser size.
  • Industrial refrigeration system — the heat absorption side, the other end of the same cycle.
  • Pressure vessel — the high-pressure receiver takes the liquid after condensing and needs a volume matched to the refrigerant charge.

Frequently asked questions about evaporative condensers

How does an evaporative condenser work?

After compression, the high-temperature, high-pressure refrigerant vapour enters the upper header and passes down into the heat exchange coil. There the hot gas exchanges heat with water sprayed from the nozzles above and condenses into liquid, draining to the high-pressure receiver below. The warmed water is then cooled by a forced air stream drawn upwards against it, so the water temperature stays almost constant. Make-up water is fed automatically through a float valve.

What are the standard design parameters?

Heat rejection capacity 250 kW to 2,500 kW · condensing temperature +35°C · wet bulb temperature +28°C · leak test pressure 20 kg/cm² · power supply 3-phase 380V/50Hz. Usable refrigerants: R22, R404a, R507 and NH3.

Why must the coil be hot-dip galvanised?

Because the coil works in a constantly sprayed water environment, corrosion is the most common cause of failure. The coil is hot-dip galvanised in full after final assembly, with a zinc layer up to 70 microns thick. The heat exchange tube is oval, 21.6 × 31.7 mm and 1.5 mm thick, with no welded joints along its whole length — removing the most common leak point.

What type of fans and pumps are used?

Axial fans with blades mounted directly on the motor, large in diameter and low in speed, so 3 to 5 dB quieter than conventional fans. Corrosion-resistant aluminium alloy blades and a purpose-built motor to IP55 protection. The water pump is a low-head, high-flow horizontal type mounted inside the condenser to limit environmental exposure, using a WEG or Siemens motor.

How does an evaporative condenser differ from an air-cooled condenser?

An evaporative condenser uses both water and air, so heat transfer efficiency is higher and both size and electricity consumption are lower at the same capacity. In return, the unit needs a make-up water supply and water treatment to limit scaling. For a plant running continuously at high capacity, the difference in electricity cost usually repays the water treatment investment within a short time.

What does evaporative condenser maintenance involve?

Cleaning the coil and the spray nozzles, checking the float valve and water quality, and checking the pump and fan motors. Scale build-up on the condenser is a common cause of rising condensing pressure and higher compressor power draw — this item is included in the scheduled maintenance package offered by Tan Long.
